I remember how Aunty Aishat (though I don't know what she looks like now) would hold my hands in hers and write the alphabets in capital and small letters, ensuring each letter rest on the line and not below the line except for the small letter "p", "g" and some others.
She would fume and smile at my errors and corrections. Sometimes, I look up at her face trying to find frustrations or see if you would hit me for making the same mistake over and over. Not that, I really understood what she might have been going through at that time; all I knew was, she was my teacher and she could beat me if I did something wrong.
But, she never really did. She would smile at my terrible writings which seem more like a drawing to her and now to me.
She would hold my hands each day until I was good or seemingly good enough to hold my pencil in my own hands and then my pen and now my life!
When a child knows how to write, speak and act appropriately, thank the teacher who put extra efforts in molding that child. Thank that teacher who learnt to put aside her own fears, struggle, pain and hurts in pursuit for your own growth, development and happiness.
Thank that teacher who takes her time to emphasis and re-emphasis those words even when she finds it frustrating and then smiles at your smile and acknowledgment of comprehension - It is food to her stomach and merry to her heart. She is FULFILLED!
Let's do a quick Mathematics at the total number of hours children spend with their teachers than with their parents.
At 8am the child is in school and does not close until 6pm sometimes, with the inclusion of extra lessons which helps the parent on the other hand buy time to beat traffic and get home.
This is done 5 times a week! So the child spends roughly 9-10hours at school each day and perhaps 2-3/4 hours with parents before bed time.
Please help with the rest of the calculations!
So if you are indifferent about the celebration of these noble profession and noble people, I suggest you stop taking your kids to school and teach for a day to know how 'easy' a task it is!
It's World Teachers Day, send some flowers, cards or a wish to your teachers.
Lets celebrate our life molders and mind builders.
