She Needs To Know!

While taking my walk one of those mornings, I noticed a woman I had seen earlier, especially because of her bright purple blouse. This time though, I noticed her more not because of her blouse but the constant stare she got from everyone that walked past her.

It seemed like she either looked funny or was doing something that made them turn (back) to look at her – I was curious. So, I sort of hastened my walk a little. I got directly behind her, nothing seemed wrong from where I stood.

Her slightly body hugging purple blouse was seated right on the waist of a black boot cut denim. She had a silk multi coloured scarf tied loosely on her head. The scarf was gorgeous and had some splash of purple, yellow, black and lavender on it. It looked like those type you would rather have tied around your neck.

I moved slightly past her, and then she spoke. Not to me, to some imaginary friend in her head. I slowed down my pace, I needed to be sure of what I heard and I truly was resisting the temptation of turning to look at her – I would have been looking at her directly in the eyes unlike others.
She said with a smile (I could tell), “hey Jim, there you are. I have been looking everywhere for you”. My heart bled, not exactly because of what she said, but how she said it and oh my gosh, she spoke so well and had a soft calm voice.

I almost cried.

I turned few seconds later, when I didn’t hear her voice again. This time, she had crossed to the other side of the road, to pluck something she probably thought was a flower.
I walked faster thinking about this woman and wondering what could have happened to her and when. So many questions and pictures popped in my head. As I got to my finish point to turn back towards the direction I was initially coming from, she was right in front of me.

This time, I could see her face – not so clearly because I didn’t want to stare, but enough to know she is a beauty. I sighed and thought about all the campaigns for mental health and wellbeing and how extremely important it was for us to care about our minds – I wished she could find help. I wished I had the courage and expertise to talk her. More importantly, I hoped she had loved ones who cares for her.

Now and always, I’m sending her and many others going through trauma, depression or any form of mental illness –

Love & Light,
TA

P.s – Have you registered for the TEdxYabawomen event (tedxyaba.com)? We would be discussing at length the issues of mental health and wellness with experts from the Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI), Stand To End Rape (STER) and moderated by the amazing Chude Jideonwo, Founder Joy Inc.

For My G.Ma - Felicia

I never knew I would miss her this much. People never understood why I love Christmas. I didn’t quite get it too – apart   from the bursting joy of the birth of Christ, the melodious songs and beautiful decorations; there was more to the super hyper and lovey-dovey feeling I always have this season. So, I was scrolling through my phone gallery and saw the last photo I had with my G.Ma. Oh by the way, Christmas was her birth and death day. I’m writing this because of her. Just to share a bit of her awesomeness with you. That woman was a bad-ass! Reminiscing on my childhood memories with her, I realized she was the reason I love Christmas. I usually spent my Christmas and New-Year holidays with her as a child. She would take me to her church and ask the priest to allow me join other children in the Christmas carol rehearsals and performances. She would take me to the salon and have my hair done and accessorized. I hated making my hair, it was just too stressf...

Hello there!

Is it too late to say happy new year😥?! I mean, a quarter in the year 2021 is almost over, so I will let this mushy feeling slide, and let’s say I will pretend like I have been writing and written to you all these while.    Happy? Yes.    So, what have you been up to?  As for me, after the whole #EndSARS movement, I just literally had this block. In fact, I wrote a couple of things in my notebook but just couldn’t bring myself to sharing here.  I was beyond devastated, as many people – Nigerians were.    Anyways, before and since then, I was also doing a lot of thinking, studying, and preparing for a professional examination, which I wrote and passed in December, last year – yay!! Then, I have just been having ideas on a lot of things I would have loved to share with you but you know what they say about procrastination. Yea….got the best of this relationship!   I’m sorry.  Now, I hope to be more consistent – I know I have said that a mi...

Killings in South Africa

I read and saw pathetic images of the killings of black foreigners by South Africans who are claiming or angry that these foreigners are taking up all available jobs and congesting available facilities and they also claim they are illegal immigrants. Read up the story captured by Al Jazeera below: 'Thousands of people have attended a march in South Africa's coastal city of Durban in solidarity with the country's foreign nationals.
